Welcome to June! (And hurricane season!) I'll never forget when Hurricane Milton came through here two years ago--my dog had to go out at 10:30 p.m., right when the storm was above us. I stood on the porch, my back to the side of the house, while water swirled all around our house and weird aqua lightning cracked the sky--not an experience I want to repeat in 2026. Wherever you are, I hope you stay high and dry this summer!

Expect the Unexpected . . .

What good books have you read this year? My book club read THE CORRESPONDENT, an epistolary novel I enjoyed very much. We just finished Georgette Heyer's ARABELLA--an older regency with lots of heart and humor. If you enjoy Jane Austen, you should give it a read. I don't know why it hasn't been made into a movie!

​I'm happy to report that Unwavering Heart, the story of Rebekah, releases in September--and in the spring of 2027, the Matriarchs series ends with the story of Rachel and Leah in Devoted Heart. I learned so much writing those books--I hope you will enjoy them!

I've heard some grumblings about the fact that I used the book of Jasher and other apocryphal books to fill in gaps in those stories, but those ancient books are grounded in history. Would they have been more accurate if I'd written those books entirely from my imagination? I think it's far better to have even a sketchy historical record than a completely imaginary basis for stories of biblical characters. After all, novels are fiction. These, however, are absolutely as accurate as I could make them. I hope you'll enjoy learning what likely went on behind the scenes with Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel and Leah.

Since those books are finished, I am moving on to another genre--at the moment, contemporary thrillers. I know many of you adore biblical fiction, but that genre has become quite crowded with the popularity of The Chosen, and I have never been one to write what everyone else is writing. I'm not saying I'll never write another historical novel based on biblical characters, but I've been doing it for a LONG while and I'm ready to move away from deserts and donkeys.

I recently finished a book called THE GLADES--it's a dual-time novel about a man who recklessly imports Nile crocodiles into the Florida Everglades--and how the significance of his actions affects people generations later. The book is with my agent now, and I hope she soon finds a home for it. (This isn't the real cover--it's just a mockup I made for fun and inspiration.)

At this very moment, I'm working on a series about a group of writers who set out to save the world! I'm just getting started, but I'm loving the idea. The series is tentatively titled the THE IMAGINATION BRIEF. (It'd be more accurate to write Imagination Briefs, but that sounds too much like underwear, don't you think?)

In any case, I am having a ball writing contemporaries again. If you enjoyed THE FACE, LET DARKNESS COME, THE ELEVATOR, or THE TRUTH TELLER, these books should be your cup of tea.

I love teaching, but I also love being with writer friends, because we don't often have a chance to be together. I think that's part of what fueled my desire to write The Imagination Brief.
